Scope and Contents

The papers in the Fr. James H. Moynihan collection document the time period he was President of the College of St. Thomas, 1933-1943.  The papers include subject files that cover the various professional organizations Moynihan belonged to and his role in keeping St. Thomas accredited.  The files also touch upon the Naval V-12 program that was on the campus during the war and campus improvements such as new buildings. The notes include Moynihan’s personal reflections on a variety of topics, including music and religion.  The correspondence includes letters from individuals and organizations especially accrediting institutions and donors.

Biographical or Historical Information

James H. Moynihan was born in County Limerick, Ireland, on August 27, 1882.  He was educated at Rockwell College and St. Munchen's before he came to the Saint Paul Seminary in 1899. He studied theology in Rome for four years before his ordination on May 25, 1907.  He returned to St. Paul to teach at St. Thomas Academy and at Nazareth Hall.  In 1920, he was appointed to the faculty of the College of St. Thomas where he taught in the English Department. 

Fr. Moynihan was appointed president of the College of St. Thomas in 1933 and served until 1943. After his brother Humphrey's death in 1943 (also a former president of the College), James Moynihan was appointed pastor of Incarnation Parish in Minneapolis.  He served in this capacity until his death on February 12, 1959.
