The Thomas Edward Shields papers consist of a typescript entitled "Daily Thoughts" dating from 1887.  The essay was written while Shields was a student at the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary (a precusor to the College of St. Thomas).

Biographical or Historical Information

Thomas Edward Shields (1862-1921) is often considered the first professional Catholic religious educator in the United States.  Born in Mendota, MN, he attended the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary and was ordained for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 1891.  He then attended Johns Hopkins University where he received his MA and Ph.D. in the natural sciences.  He returned to Minnesota and taught at the Saint Paul Seminary from 1895 to 1898, then served in several parishes until 1902.  In 1902, he became a professor of Philosophy and later the chair of the Department of Education at the Catholic University of America, a position in which he served until his death in 1921.
