Biographical or Historical Information

Francis Norbert (Frank) Mayer was born in Chicago Heights, IL on June 6, 1912. Mayer graduated from the De La Salle Institute in Chicago in 1930 and then attended the VanderCook School of Music from 1930-1932.  From 1929-1933, he was a member of the 106th Cavalry’s Chicago Blackhorse Troop mounted band.

Mayer taught instrumental music in Chicago and later at Cretin High School, St. Paul, while studying for his B.S. in Education from the University of Minnesota (1942) and a M.A. in Music from Northwestern University (1947).  He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 1957.

Mayer joined the faculty of the College of St. Thomas in 1948 as a woodwind instructor and the conductor of the Concert Band (a position he held for 35 years).  He served as chair of the Music Department from 1973 – 1982.  Mayer was named Professor of the Year in 1982.  He retired from the college in 1982.

Francis Mayer passed away on October 20, 2007 in Saint Paul, MN.
