The Eamonn O'Toole Papers include letters and scholarly papers received by O'Toole from colleagues.  The collection includes correspondence with a number of individuals prominent in Celtic Studies, including that of Douglas Hyde, first President of the Irish Free State.

Biographical or Historical Information

Eamonn O'Toole (Éamonn Ó Tuathail) was born in 1883.   He received his BA in Celtic Studies at University College, Dublin, and his MA from the National University of Ireland in 1914.  He served on the staff of the summer College of Irish in Clochaneely from 1907 to 1929, serving first as an instructor and later as secretary of the organization.  O'Toole held professorships at Castelknock College and at the Carmelite College, Terenure, before becoming the Chair of Irish at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1929.  He died in 1956.

The O'Toole papers are a collection formed from documents found in the books from Professor O'Toole's personal library which were purchased in 1956 for inclusion in the College of St. Thomas’ Celtic Collection.

Processing Information

The collection was processed by departmental staff in 1980 with additions made to the collection in 1983.
