Biographical or Historical Information
The “Famous Gas House Tigers” were first organized in on campus in 1916 as an intramural basketball team comprised of college lettermen. The group quickly evolved into one of the most influential social organizations on the St. Thomas campus, with its principal purpose to foster and promote school spirit.
The Tigers were best known for organizing one the biggest social events on campus each year, the initiation of freshmen at the annual Tiger Homecoming. The amateur variety show put on by the freshmen was the highlight of the event which was attended by large numbers of faculty, students, alumni and friends of the College. The first women were inducted into the Club in 1982.
In the mid-1970s, the group’s focus changed as the responsibility for freshman orientation was taken over by the Office of Student Life. The group continued to participate in community spirit building and service activities until its official club status was revoked by the All College Council in the mid-1990s.
