Biographical or Historical Information

The Selim Center for Learning in Later Years was established as the Center for Senior Citizens' Education at the (then) College of St. Thomas in 1973. The Center offers a number of lifelong learning opportunities as a way to enrich adult learners' lives and help them continue as active, participating members of the community. It provides a setting in which older adults are encouraged to share their experience and expertise with younger students. This goal is achieved through a variety of programs including lecture series which are offered each semester and the Center’s original program, Go To School, which allows seniors to audit courses. The Center was renamed the Selim Center for Learning in Later Years on May 12, 2011. The name change honored Dr. Mohamed Selim, professor emeritus of Economics at the University of St. Thomas, who founded the program.
