Biographical / Historical
Fr. Robert J. Schaeffer (Colonel United States Air Force) was born on February 14, 1916 in rural Nicollet County, Minnesota to Leo and Ameilia (Bushard) Schaeffer. He attended Holy Trinty School in New Ulm and Nazareth Hall Seminary before entering the Saint Paul Seminary in 1936. He was ordained into the priesthood on June 6, 1942 at the St. Paul Cathedral and offered his first Mass on June 8, 1942 at the Church of the Visitation in Swan Lake, MN. After serving in the St. Agnes parish in St. Paul for two years, Fr. Schaefer joined the Army Air Corps and trained as a chaplain. He served in the United States Air Force Chaplain Corps until 1969. He returned Minnesota as served in St. Andrew's parish in Fairfax, MN until his retirement in 1981. After his retirement, Fr. Schaefer moved to Florida and later to Donaldson, IN. He died on May 19, 2012.
