Biographical or Historical Information
The Saint Paul Seminary was founded in 1894 by Archbishop John Ireland to educate men to be ordained Roman Catholic priests for the Upper Midwest. Ireland's vision for the seminary was brought to reality through a generous monetary gift given by Great Northern Railway president, James J. Hill and his wife Mary Meaghan Hill. The seminary affiliated with the (then) College of St. Thomas in 1987. After the affiliation, the seminary continued its programs to support the formation of priests and opened its School of Divinity to provide education for laity to become parish leaders.
