Scope and Contents

The Music Department Records include materials documenting the history and administration of the department.  The collection includes annual reports and subject files as well as programs from performances by student and and faculty choirs and musical groups.  It also includes documentation on the construction on the Kney organ in the St. Thomas Chapel and subsequent guest performers on the instrument.  The series relating to the Graduate Programs in Music includes not only administrative and publicity materials relating to the program, but also documentation of Orff Workshops offered in the Twin Cities prior to the establishment of the graduate program at St. Thomas.

Biographical or Historical Information

The University of St. Thomas has offered courses in music since its opening in 1885.  The Department of Music was first organized in 1915.  The undergraduate music major was developed in 1929.  The Graduate Programs in Music Education were intitated in 1991.
