Biographical or Historical Information
College of St. Thomas first offered engineering courses in 1918 under the leadership of its founding dean, Arvid Reuterdahl. The School of Engineering, flourished in this period offering educationg over 500 students. When Reuterdahl left the college in 1922, the enrollment declined and the engineering program was soon after disbanded.
The College continued to offer a pre-engineering course at the undergraduate level. The 2-3 curriculum allowed students to take prepartory courses at St. Thomas before transferring to the University of Minnesota, University of Notre Dame or other engineering programs at other universities.
Engineering returned to St. Thomas in 1985, when the Masters of Manufacturing Systems Engineering (MMSE) was first offered. The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) program enrolled it first students at the undergraduate level in 1998. Building on the success of the BSME program, majors in Computer, Civil and Electrical Engineering followed.
In 2004, the department was reorganized into the School of Engineering. The engineering program is the only one offered at a private college or university in Minnesota.
