Biographical or Historical Information
From its opening in 1885, the students of the University of St. Thomas (and its precursors the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary and the College of St. Thomas) have participated in athletic teams. Initially, the students competed in intramural competitions and later against other athletic clubs in the Twin Cities region. The school began competing in intercollegiate athletics in 1903 when the Minnesota Athletic Conference (a forerunner to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) was formed with St. Thomas as a memeber. Women's athletics were added in 1977, the year the College became co-educational.
St. Thomas was voted out of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in 2019. The school made the leap from Division III athletics to Division I athletics in the Fall of 2021 joining the Pioneer League for football, the CCHA & WCHA for hockey and the Summit League for all other sports.
