Biographical or Historical Information
James P. Callahan was born in Fargo, ND and raised in Albany, MN. He earned a BA from St. John’s University in Collegeville in 1964 and an MFA in piano and Ph.D. in music theory and composition from the University of Minnesota. In addition, he studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Vienna Academy of Music. Callahan joined the College of St. Thomas faculty in 1968. He taught piano, organ, composition, music theory, and piano literature until his retirement as a full professor in 2006. James Callahan passed away on December 28, 2023.
Callahan wrote more than 150 works in many genres: operas, concertos, symphonies, chamber music and orchestral and organ works. As an organist, he performed throughout the Upper Midwest and in Austria and New York. His compositions have been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and many St. Thomas ensembles and other groups.
