Biographical or Historical Information

Franklin Chapin Smith was born Sept 29, 1904 in Lebanon, IN.  He attended the University of Michigan where he received his BA (1931), MA (1932), and Ph.D. (1934) in Mathematics.  Smith taught at the College of St. Francis (1934 – 1943), Indiana University (1944 – 1945) and Purdue University (1946) before being appointed to the faculty of the College of St. Thomas in 1947.  He served as an associate professor and chair of the Mathematics Department until 1957, when he left St. Thomas to join the actuarial firm of George Stennes and Associates.  He died in St. Paul on June 13, 1981.
