Biographical or Historical Information
J. Herman Schauinger was born in Logansport, IN in 1913. He attended the University of Indiana receiving a BA in 1935 and MA in 1936. He received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University in 1939. After teaching at the University of Michigan, the University of Idaho, and Gannon College (Erie, PA), Schauinger was appointed to the History faculty at the College of St. Thomas in 1945 where he taught until his death in 1971.
Schauinger was the author of numerous articles and five books relating to the history of Catholicism in the United States. Among these were : William Gaston : Carolinian; Cathedrals in the Wilderness; Stephen T. Badin : Priest In the Wilderness; and A Page of Minnesota History : St. Thomas of St. Paul (unpublished).
