Scope and Contents
The Mathias Gillen papers include notes from Gillen's studies at St. Francis and Saint Paul Seminaries during the period 1896 - 1903 which constitute the bulk of this collection. One file documents his role as the Director of Student Life at the College of St. Thomas from 1934 - 1936.

Biographical or Historical Information
Mathias Gillen was born on July 25, 1882 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was educated in local parochial schools until 1895 when he entered the St. Francis Minor Seminary in Milwaukee, WI. In 1901, he entered the Saint Paul Seminary and was ordained into the priesthood for the Archdiocese of St. Paul on June 12, 1907.
Gillen's first assignment as a priest by Archbishop Ireland was to attend the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He received his Bachelor of Philosophy (1908) and Master of Arts (1909) in Classical Languages from that institution.
In 1909 Gillen was assigned to the Department of Languages at the College of St. Thomas. He remained a member of the faculty at CST for the next 51 years, serving as the Director of Studies (1915 - 1918), Director of Athletics (1922 - 1925) and Chair of the Department of Classics (1918 - 1928).
