Biographical or Historical Information

Frederick Flynn was born in Sault St. Marie, Ontario in 1912. After receiving his BA (1935) and MA (1939) at the University of Western Ontario, he attended the University of Notre Dame receiving his Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1942.

Flynn came to the College of St. Thomas in 1948 and served as Professor of Philosophy here until his retirement in 1979. A gifted teacher, he was recognized with the Professor of the Year award in 1970. He is best known for his scholarship relating to St. Thomas Aquinas's definition of "natural law" as it applied to overpopulation and the Roman Catholic Church's stance on artificial means of birth control.

Flynn was active professionally, founding the Minnesota Philosophic Association and the Minnesota Chapter of Citizens for Educational Freedom.

He died on October 22, 1996 in Minneapolis, MN.
