Biographical or Historical Information
James William Whalen was born August 22, 1924, in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from the St. Thomas Military Academy (1942) before entering University of Minnesota where he earned a degree in journalism in 1947. After graduation, he worked in advertising for five years before entering the Saint Paul Seminary in 1953. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul on February 23, 1958.
Fr. Whalen joined the faculty of the College of St. Thomas in 1959 where he established the Journalism Department while completing his MA in Journalism at the University of Minnesota (1962). Whalen served as chair of the Journalism Department in from 1959 – 1987 and helped design St. Thomas’s MA in Business Communication program. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Professor of the Year Award by his faculty colleagues in 1983. Fr. Whalen retired from teaching 1993 and passed away on April 7, 2003.
