Biographical or Historical Information

Frederic Bieter was born June 6, 1905 in Heron Lake, MN.  He attended St. Thomas Academy (graduating in 1922) and pursued higher education at the College of St. Thomas, Nazareth Hall Preparatory Seminary, and the Saint Paul Seminary before his ordination in 1930.  In 1931, Fr. Bieter enrolled in the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. where he received  his Doctorate in Classical Languages in 1938.  From 1935 - 1980, he taught Greek and Latin at the College of St. Thomas, serving as chair of the Foreign Languages Department  from 1938-1973.  For thirty years, he served as official Latin translator for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.  Msgr. Bieter died  May 4, 1983 in St. Paul, MN.

The collection was given to the University Archives by Msgr. Bieter's estate in July 1983.

The collection was processed in July 1986 by James McKernon and with additional material added in April 2000.
